So you have just received your sparkling costume jewellery and now want to keep it looking sparkling. Costume jewellery can be extremely delicate, meaning that you should care for it the same as you would with precious jewellery. Keep your jewellery looking sparkling with our top tips for how to care for your costume jewellery.
1. Avoid contact with water
Protect your jewellery by avoiding contact with water, it's a common known fact that contact with water can sometimes affect the appearance of metals, stones, crystals, pearls and plating. Help your jewellery to last longer by removing it before washing your hands and showering. Soap residue and hair conditioner do not rinse properly from your gemstones as they would from your hair and skin. This means that these oils will attract dirt ultimately dulling the life of your stones.
2. Store jewellery properly
To ensure that your costume jewellery remains dazzling you should store your items carefully in their individual gift box, this helps to avoid scratching, getting tangled with other jewellery, minor breaks, tarnishing and keeps your jewellery away from direct sunlight.
If you store your jewellery in a jewellery box try and divide these items by large compartments, as this will help reduce the tangling and knotting of chains.
3. Don't give up
If one of your favourite items breaks, don't give up. Many times these breaks are simple fixes, and can be fixed with replacing basic jump rings, clasps or eye pins. So next time see where the item has broke and see if all it needs is a quick fix.
If you jewellery is not repairable, think about recycling your favourite stones, or design in a new jewellery piece.
4. Avoid contact with sprays
Ensure that perfumes and cosmetics are thoroughly dry on the skin before putting on costume jewellery. If your skin is not completely dry this can cause crystals to lose their sparkling, and quickly look dull, whilst pearls may stain and plating can discolour.
5. Keep your jewellery sparkling
If you're costume jewellery is looking a little lacklustre, give it the oomph it needs by gently wiping the crystals with a slightly damp cloth. Always make sure you are gentle when cleaning your jewellery, as you do not want to damage or scratch the surface.
I hope these tips were useful! I'd love to know if you have any tips for caring for your jewellery!
